Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
